A Message from the Chair of the Organising Committee
Welcome to the Gravity Grand Prix, an event that embodies the very best of community spirit, creativity, and friendly competition. Each year, 30 teams from all walks of life gather to craft and race their gravity-powered soapbox cars through the streets, bringing excitement, energy, and an unforgettable spectacle to Cookham Dean.
This incredible event wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our eight-person organising committee, who work tirelessly for an entire year to ensure every detail runs smoothly. From coordinating race entries and volunteers to securing road closures, advertising, sponsorships, and food and drink vendors, their passion and commitment are what make the Gravity Grand Prix so special.
We are proud to organise this event under the banner of The Cherry Pickers of Cookham Dean, a local group devoted to bringing the community together through vibrant and meaningful celebrations. Cookham Dean’s deep-rooted sense of camaraderie is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s what makes this event truly unique.
We also take a moment to honor Peter Bartlett, the visionary founder of the Gravity Grand Prix. Though he sadly passed away a few years ago, his legacy continues to inspire us all. In his honour, we present the Peter Bartlett Founder Award each year to recognise the most memorable moment of the event weekend, ensuring his spirit and contributions are never forgotten.
Additionally, we are privileged to have the continued support of Ross Kemp, a well-known local resident and celebrated television personality. His enthusiasm and commitment to the event have been invaluable, and his role in presenting prizes to the winners has become a cherished tradition, adding prestige and excitement to the day.
Beyond the thrill of the race, the Gravity Grand Prix is proud to serve a greater purpose—raising over £250,000 for local good causes, including our main beneficiary, Thames Valley Air Ambulance. This incredible charity provides life-saving emergency care to people in urgent need, responding rapidly with highly skilled medical teams. Thanks to the generosity of our participants, sponsors, and spectators, we have been able to support this vital organisation and other local causes, ensuring that their essential services continue to make a difference in the community.
The race itself is just the centerpiece of an incredible logistical effort. It takes two and half days to build the course, transforming the streets into a challenging and exciting circuit that ensures the best racing experience for participants and spectators alike. After the excitement of race day, a full teardown takes place the following day, returning Cookham Dean to its peaceful, picturesque setting. None of this would be possible without our over 100 volunteers, whose tireless efforts keep everything running smoothly—alongside our fantastic food and drink vendors, who bring the festival atmosphere to life.
From racers to spectators, volunteers to sponsors, everyone who takes part in the Gravity Grand Prix plays a vital role in making this event such a remarkable celebration of teamwork, ingenuity, and fun. Whether you're competing for glory or cheering from the sidelines, we invite you to embrace the excitement and revel in the spirit of community that defines our village.
Here’s to another unforgettable Gravity Grand Prix—let’s race!
